Dental health issues can pose a lot of challenges. For instance, they are quite inconvenient, especially when they happen at night. Therefore, it is always advisable to follow the proper oral health care procedures to avoid issues. However, even with the best care and management, sometimes you will suffer problems that need professional treatment. Here are three of the most common dental health issues and how you can treat them.
The gums are a crucial part of your overall dental setup. Gums mainly support your teeth and hide the roots and the jawbone from unnecessary exposure. Few people think about the gums as much as they should.
When you have an abscess, the gums swell and get very painful. Similarly, redness and soreness are signs that you might have an issue with your gums. Gum disease is a common ailment, and it can lead to tooth loss. Therefore, it is advisable to see a dentist as soon as you notice signs of gum disease. They can help treat the condition surgically or non-surgically. Non-surgical treatment involves removing tartar from the root of the tooth and allowing it to heal naturally. Surgical treatment includes eliminating the gum infection and regenerating the bone through surgery.
Tooth sensitivity is another common dental health problem. You might start by experiencing discomfort when you eat or drink hot and cold foods and beverages. Sensitivity is a sign that your enamel has worn away, exposing the dentin and the nerve endings. If you do not deal with the issue quickly, you might end up with cavities. Tooth decay starts with sensitivity, and then holes form inside the tooth. It is advisable to see a dentist to help you figure out the intervention measures that can help you reduce dental sensitivity.
Oral cancer has become more common. Fortunately, health experts can treat cancer, but it's easiest to treat when it has been diagnosed during the early stages. Some of the risk factors of the disease include smoking and chewing tobacco, and you should avoid them. However, you should see a dentist if you have been smoking and have noticed symptoms like sores that don't heal, loose teeth, and lumps inside your mouth. They will run the necessary tests and help you start the treatment.

I have worked as a school nurse for decades. Children come to me with all sorts of scrapes and bumps and bruises. Black eyes from playing football, sprained wrists from falling off the monkey bars and stomachaches from too many sweets are common complaints. However, the issue that seems to cause the greatest angst is tooth problems. Sometimes a child will have a second tooth knocked out when playing sport and parents arrive in tears. At other times, children come to my office crying because their friends are teasing them about teeth that are discoloured or stick out. I take an active interest in the latest dental news so that I can give parents and children comfort and advice. I have included some of my collected wisdom on these pages. Perhaps this information can help you understand some options when faced with a dental problem. Thank you for reading.
